    99 State Cup Week One

Post  txlongball on Sun May 02, 2010 4:36 pm

It was a good weekend of soccer. Based on observation it should be a Texans - Andromeda Red Final.

Thought FCD, Comets and Barcelona were all disappointing. Texans South and Solar Red are good, but a step behind Texans and Andromeda.

Texans are by far the most complete team, however, Andromeda may be the most dangerous. I would like to see the Gunners to well, I just think they rank last out of the final four.

    Agree or disagree?

I think your description is quite good and accurate. The DTS team seems to have regained some focus and played well the little I watched them. I thought the game today between them and the Comets was over in the first 5 minutes. A couple quick goals and that swagger were way too much for the Comets. Makes me think their first game was a combination of Comets playing out of their minds and DTS playing poorly. Our game with them on Saturday should be a good one that will come down to who plays better that day.

Texans-Gunners game should not be a contest. Any good possession type soccer team will win out over speed, bump, and grind. Nothing against the Gunners, congrats to them for their play and I'm especially happy they took it to Barcelona.

    A couple other observations;

FCD - Seems to have lost the momentum they had the last few games of the season. I'm sure the coaching change and drama has much to do with it, always carries over to the kids in some form or other.

Barcelona - This is a good little team but their size hurts them. They are also dirty to say the least. One of those elbows, shoves, etc. is going to hurt somebody one of these days. They need to focus that anger towards better soccer.

Solar - Guess the better seeding didn't help much, good luck in D2.

    Those are good obsevations:
Texans,Texan(South),Solar Red,Andro(red), Gunners all looked very good for the first tourney of the spring season. Those four teams seem to be making progress and have some talent.
FCD- Seem to be lost and lacking in a few areas. Really were really looking bad defensivly and not many dynamic offensive players. They seem to be a team that were full of players at u9 and are beginning to slow down. It happens!
Barcelona- Good soccer players just to slow and small. So much for the soccer player compared to the athlete stupid argument. Great little soccer players just not athletic enough.
Comets- How did they rip up Solar Red and South in back to back weekends this spring? Roids? Could be a long u12 season.

Texans South completely out played Andromeda Red today. I have to say I was very surprised how well South played. Texas Gunners seemed to hold everybody back on defense against the Texans, Texans were patient and the winning goal came in the second half. I am not sure the Gunners strategy was wise, but if they did not play defensive they may have been blown out.

Tomorrow's final should be a really good game. I think I will go with the Texans since they always seem to do well in the big games.

How are the other tournaments progressing? Any surprises?

A final score of 4-0 is a team being outplayed. With a final score of 4-3 somehow I find that hard to believe that they were totally outplayed. Sounds like the semi's were pretty exciting with such close scores. Good luck to the teams torrow in the finals.

It's a classic Texans franchise matchup for the 99 finale. Both teams are strong with good talent. Cheesey has a deeper roster, so he gets the pick. Possession vs Creativity. Everyone is a winner in this duel for the age.

Cowtown-Azzurri won its bracket. Don't know about the other two brackets or wild card since the tourney still hasn't posted anything but first game. I would assume FWFC advanced as well since they won first game 6-0. Don't even know who we play tomorrow and not sure why it's so hard to post results from games that finished almost 5 hours ago.

It was a very competitive final in the 99B bracket.
DTS struck first with a sneaky little shot just outside the 6 yrd box that squeezed the near post on the left side. DT equalized late in the game after a right side formation change.
All knotted up 1-1 after regulation, the match stayed that way through the first 10 minute overtime period.
With only minutes left in the second overtime DT found the winner off a round house kick in front of the net on the right side.
Everything you want to final to be!
The match was kept in check by great officiating. Good calls on all sides. A few sidebar conversation with players kept the emotion of the game under control.
See you all on the pitch next year. It's been a pleasure...

I think it was a very exciting game to watch and would call it possession vs long ball. Both teams are definitely winners and would have beat any other teams in the age group today. These two teams will battle each other for years to come and showcase the differing styles of play.

Congratulations Texans on being Classic league and State champions.

What a fantastic experiece for the boys. Both teams played hard, fought fair, and gave it everything they had. Really impressed with the officiating. They treated the players with respect as if they were men. Loved the international flair they added to the beginning with the presentation of players. My son said that as they walked to the middle of the field, he was singing the EUFA Cup anthem in his head.
He is still talking about it this morning.
Hope everyone else had a great expericnce also.

I agree completely - great tournament and all the matches were hard fought by all teams. I hope its a preview of what Classic League will be in the fall, great matches that are nail-biters until the last whistle! Congrats to all the players, coaches and parents!

Will next year in D1 be a two horse race or does FCD,Andro or Gunners have a chance to crash the party?

I would think that FCD, DT and andro have the best opportunity to stregnthen their teams. DTS is limited by location and gunners by size of the club. Plenty of time before next season so we will see some different looks

Based on what I have seen lately, I think it will be DT, DTS, Andromeda, Solar Red and Gunners as early favorites for the top five (no particular order). I think FCD will struggle a bit at first and pick up momentum later in the season due to the changes they are going through. I think the above teams are improving defensively, therefore, games are going to be very close next season.

Do not go gently into that good night. Rage, rage against the dying of the light!
I, somehow, do not foresee FCD struggling, even for a bit. Be patient, young lads, for the shuffling will come. I read it in my tea leaves.

A couple weeks out and after watching Barcelona play Sevilla, I have a new perspective and admiration for this game. Watching a live game in a European setting is UNBELIEVABLE.

There is a couple big surprises in the works from what I hear so way too early to be talking about top 5 imo, but for the time being and the way things are, I like your picks.

Now hopefully this ash clears so I can get home..........

Ahhhh..... wondered why we had not heard from you lately. My thoughts were based on what I have seen lately, it seems the defensive side is developing faster than the offensive side of the game. I have heard many folks say that happens around this age, defenders get better and keepers get taller - much more focus on good defenders and mid-fielders that are strong on both offense and defense.

Interested to hear about the big surprises - please share, we need some rumors to discuss and debate.
