    Dribble-Up OT Shootout...

    Post  b0013 on Thu Jan 27, 2011 8:27 am

Son's first year in HS. During last week tournament game saw the 5sec dribble-up OT shootout for the first time. Fun to watch..out of 10 JV boys taking the dribble-up, only one scored, and that was only due to keeper error.

Question is for you die hard soccer peoples...unlike PK's, a good keeper has advantage in the dribble-up. What is the best method for getting ball into the net within the 5sec time?

Quick dribble in for shot before keeper comes out? Quick delay and wait for keeper to come out then take long shot? Head to head with keeper and try to dribble around for shot?

Good question. I like that format as well.
I've only seen the dribble up and around, taking an angled shot.

Someone who has seen more of these - I'd be curious as to the most likely scenario in these.

Does anyone take a long stride then fire at a corner?

Best technique is to take a slightly longer first touch, smaller second touch and then shoot. That being said, never dribble to a side as it cuts the shooting angle, approach the keeper straight up. As the keeper is just about to set his feet, shoot. Shots from the knee down and within 12 inches are the hardest for the keeper to stop. Typically a slight bend on the ball works best. If the shot goes high it better have a lot of bend or the keeper will be able to reach out easily. Advantage is usually with the keeper, but if shot is taken correctly it is tough to save.

This was the approach my son had...waited for keeper to come out some, then hit low shot to the left post..he just missed by foot outside...at least he got a shot off that keeper didnt get a chance to stop..

FYI...it's 5 seconds to TAKE the shot, not get it into the net.

Still not much time to come in, make a quick decision basied on what the keeper does, then still get a good shot off. Although really fun to watch instead of PK's...

Have to agree with most of the above. Our coach says 4 touches. One long , one short , one to set up shot and shoot. Have to disagree with the keeper having the advantage. We have had three shoot outs and the last two we got 3 and 4 goals. The last one they were making it look easy. Five seconds is actually plenty of time. Most rush it and use less than three seconds.

JV, they know nothing! Let the Varsity show the way. Wink

In truth it's not that complicated. It's a 1 on 1 situation, where the players has all the time and space to get a good shot off. Best method I've always seen is as in any 1v1, let the defender show you the way and take what he gives you. IT definitely can be tough with a quick keeper charging out.

Don't agree with this. Last year watched a player who was very quick come up to the keeper and then dart off to the side and shoot around the keeper. Saw him use this technique every time, about 5 shootouts and he was the only player on the team that made every one of his pk's.

Grinder good thought, I should have stated to not start dribbling at an angle away from the goal, making it obvious. That gives the keeper more time and angles to adjust. I agree with what you state that if quick enough a shooter can take an angle late and beat the keeper. Good point.

Sure, but if everyone did the 'see-ball, hit-ball' method of thinking - all those batting coaches would not be employed and we couldn't see our favorite ex-player still wear a uniform at the age of 65.

Now that sounds more like a non-UIL PK.
