    College Prospect Professionally Done Video

Post  Soccernovice on Mon Feb 07, 2011 9:45 pm

We have players with game footage or full game footage and some want to produce a edited version that is professionally done with copies that can be mailed to college coaches. What firms in DFW and North Dallas area do this work, are there individuals who do this as frelance work that can save money for a player? There is a 93 player that needs to get it done right away for some college coaches and he has a whole game film and what he needs is a professionally done highlight real on DVD that can be shared with coaches. Any help is appreciated!

Very few college coaches want highlight footage. Any kid can put together one of those. They want whole game footage so that they can see how the player moves without the ball and guage whether he can think tactically.

While I have talked to one coach who wanted to see a whole game, the vast majority of those I have talked with, which is a considerable number, just want ANY kind of footage. Highlight tape or game tape. And yes, any kid can put together a "some kind of" highlight tape, then again any kid can get a game tape. That is if someone has one. That point is moot. It's a tape showing quality play that is allusive. Not every kid has one of those. The only purpose for the tape is to prompt enough interest to get a coach to come watch them play. Then he/she will see off the ball movement. IMHO

I guess you miss my point. I can film a rec player for a year and find enough "highlights" to splice together to make him/her look awesome, when in reality he/she is a scrub. Full game footage is what most D1 or 2 coaches are looking for.
    We'll agree to disagree.

As a 12 year vet of rec soccer I can confidently say that there is no way you are going to make your average rec player look awesome to a college coach unless you are a CGI expert.

Thanks Soccergrinder and others you have any opinion regarding quality of tape and how it is edited. For example, a parent films game and captures ball movement and player at different times in game. The tape is pretty good not great and shakey at times when big plays happen. Good tape up to big play. If you are lucky you catch them doing something good as an individual beyond off the ball movement. Would a college coach be happy with a highlight of top level games in showcases or league play against top level competition like league leader or top 100 nationally ranked team? What about High School game tapes seems like that would be least preferred since team play is poor versus high level club play. Can a parent edit digital video into non-fancy 10 minute highlight real and use that? Do people who pay for game taping and highlight for player have advantage since their CD is fancier?

Based on my conversations with college coaches, I would not waste money paying someone to make a fancy DVD.

My advice have your kid identify 10-12 schools where they want to go to college. Focus you efforts on contacting those coaches, provide them with video if requested. Put 3-5 minutes of highlights on the video and then add separate full game to the DVD. Contact the coaches and have them attend showcase or academy games. If there seems to be an strong interest try to attend one of thier camps where your kid can interact with the coaches and college players.

Thanks for the advice. Needle good points. I think having a coach with high credibility with college coaches who can speak on a players behalf is also invaluable. One player I was trying to help that plays HS ball right now but different club team than the club I work with has had limited support in this area and is now scrambling to find the right school for him. He played academy for several years moved to club last year on top team. We are working hard Junior year to help our players get in a better position from a recruiting standpoint.

Yes every year kids are looking at prospective college soccer programs and every year we parents come on forums just like this to get advice and share experiences...imagine that. Rolling Eyes

    Novice,
It has been strongly recommended by our coach, who's been through this a few times, that a player video is strongly recommended.

    Good luck!
