    Going through withdrawal symptoms......

    Post  Fabiano9 on Sun Feb 13, 2011 12:20 pm

We are in month three of my son's six month rehab for a knee injury, and with the spring season starting, we're both hitting the wall (psychologically).Had to get out of the house today so we went and watched a local game. Good therapy.
Any advice out there for you experienced injury survivors?

Don't go watch other soccer games-that will make it worse. There are plenty of other things to get involved in-just ask your son what he would like to do. My son has not played soccer since last June and we are surviving just fine.

SD1 is right. When my son tore his ACL we thought oh God what now? Life goes on and you find many other things to do and enjoy, but we kept contact to the team and watched their games every now and then. The coaches were very supportive and patient once he came back.

I'm curious what some of your team's expectations are for injured players. Is your son Academy or Club age? The reason I ask is -- I think the expectations would be quite different between Select and Academy. My dd went on the injured list right after QT last summer with bi-patellar tendonitis and was out until the last game of the fall season, the coach/team policy is that all players must still attend practices to observe, listen, support the team as well as suit-up for games. The support worked both ways during her rehab period when she was unable to play. It kept her very connected with the team, what they were working on, and a part of the overall team bonding that occurs with just being together. Her team provided her encouragement, support, and teammates were anxious for her return, etc. I can see where it could have been very easy for a player to disconnect to some degree with their team and the game otherwise during that rehab period. For her, when she was released to play again, the transition back was quite easy. I'm interested in hearing from others and what their team's expectation are for injured players. thoughts?
