    Slide Tackles

    Post  finish1 on Mon May 23, 2011 7:23 pm

It's tournament season and I've heard lots of talk lately regarding slide tackles. As a move, the slide tackle is one of my favorites and part of what makes soccer beautiful.

Executed correctly, a player can gain possession of a beaten ball from an opponent.

Taken to an art form, a player can swoop in, dispossess the ball, then return to their feet, with the ball, in a single, fluid motion.

From a difficulty factor, I would rate the slide tackle an 8 on a scale of 1-10.

Question: At what age do we support the slide tackle and what age is the move just too dangerous to use?

U8 and down it should be considered dangerous play. Very few possess the skill to do it right. Even fewer have the ability/reactions to avoid one.

    Slide assault

I know of two broken legs in the U-10 group this season and numerous ankle injuries to include bruises, sprains, and cleating to the lower legs/ankles because of incorrect slide tackling. I think you can figure out where I stand on the subject. Evil or Very Mad

I would like to see; penalty on a slide tackle, if its cleats up automatic yellow. Hard contact, cleats up, that s a leg breaker. Ball or not, red card. Period. Agree with finish, done correctly it is a beautiful steal or kill the ball move. It is not meant to be nor should be allowed to be the brutal taken down it more often is.

Yes, for the age groups U10 and under, the slide tackle can be very dangerous beacause the maturity level and experience are undeveloped on both sides of the play.

Reminder to all the parents out there who dismiss the sloppy slide tackle as just the "competitive juices flowing" or "physical play" that the slide tackle is one of the most skilled moves a soccer player can develop and it takes years of understanding before it can even be attempted. Watch games on tv and allow your player to learn by watching the pros. Allow them to see what is acceptable and unacceptable by watching more experienced players attempt the move. Practice at home by dribbling the ball and allowing your player to swoop in and take it from you.

Have a safe tourney season. Play smart and have fun!

Why only an automatic yellow card for a cleats up slide tackle? If you deal with these things appropriately the first time, there might not be any need for a red card the "next time".

Thanks for the ref perspective, RM. Always good to hear about the game from your point of view. Any other refs want to chime in regarding the slide tackle and what is acceptable/unacceptable? Warning, Yellow, Red? How does age factor into your decisions? As the father of a ref, maybe you can give me advice to pass along to him (he refs U8 to U5.)

What I mean is even if there is no contact to the opposing player; come in hard showing cleats =yellow. I guess that would only be a slide without the tackle.
