What to eat and drink in the Texas heat?

Looking for recommendations from all of you experienced soccer parents, players and coaches as to the best foods and drinks for our kids to combat this Texas heat and still provide them with enough energy and nutrition to keep their performance up. What combinations have you found to be successful for early morning games, afternoon games, multiple games in one day, weekend tournaments, etc...

When my bb went through QT, I called the A&M soccer coach and was told:
- carbs the night before. No heavy proteins, but fish is good.
start hydration 24 hours before. Once you get behind, you cannot catch up.
drink 50% water 50% Gatorade.
no caffeine or energy drinks.
quick proteins during the game day such as peanut butter sandwiches. Bananas and other fruit during game day.
Carb up at night and keep pushing the hydration.

All you soccer moms and dads take care of yourselves too. Your BB may eat like a champ, but if you decide to have a big burger and fries and chocolate shake just before going out to sit in the sun and bake for 90 minutes, then you are going to be extremely unhappy. Eat light, drink lots of water. Wear hats, bring your canopies, sit in the shade wherever possible. Go to Dollar Tree and buy a bunch of those mini fans. They help more than you think. (and the batteries are included!)

Absolutely no soda. Also Cliff bars are a great inbetween game snack. Beware of many of the other hydration drinks and supplements that are so populaar these days. Many are not recommended or endorsed by the medical field. Researched one recently that was offered to my son and found it was not reccommened for children under 12 or nursing or pregnant women. Decided to pass on that altogether. I personally think you can't beat fitness, good diet, alot of water, and some gatorade.

For long tournaments ....High Carbs throughout week, Wed-Thr hydrate ....basically all of the above.....be mindful of players....this is not football and there are no ice baths waiting on the sidelines.....

Almost forgot. For tournaments go to a dollar store and get 15 or 20 cheap wash cloths. The night prior wet , roll and freeze them. The next day pack them in a cooler of ice. Great for half time , between games and when subbed out. The players put them on the back off the neck or over their heads and faces. Really can lower body temp for some real relief.

Best thing I have seen for a portable mister is a fertilizer sprayer. Buy one at Home Depot, mark it water only and it provides a great, fine mist to cool the boys off.

I have seen it work for kids and adults. It helps prevent muscle cramps. Cyclist and runners, I know, swear by it. No, I do not work for them.

Did A quick search on it. It does help with cramps but only because of the phenominally high salt content. Provides a quick electrolyte jolt. But too much electrolytes is not good either. It is recommended that if an athlete is prone to cramping then he/she should increase their salt intake in their everyday diet. Being cramp prone can also be from an iron deficient diet.

Freeze bottles of Gatorade/Powerade. As they melt, give them a good shake and they turn into amazing sports drink slushies. They don't separate into hard clumps of ice like soft drinks will.
The kids love them. It keeps them hydrated and cools down their core quickly. We keep our freezer well stocked all summer.

Hey, that's what I'm bringing to a tournament this weekend. Got the idea off the girls msg board. Hooking a fertilizer sprayer up to a patio misting system. Gotta finish building it tonight.

Saw a set up 4 or 5 years ago where a guy had a 20 gallon plastic water tank, electric pump and car battery in a kid's red wagon all hooked to a misting system on a pop up awning. Worked really well.

My setup has that redneck feel (though I haven't used any duct tape yet) and probably won't work nearly as well as having a battery operated pump. I think we need a redneck emoticon.

The other day during the Venezuela vs. Paraguay game the Venezuela goalie was gulping down honey from a bottle. He did this after the game ended on a tie in overtime. He was getting ready for the penalty shoot outs. Honey is a Good energy boost during demanding games or halftimes.

Until 30-45 minutes later when you crash from the sugar rush.

The game should be over by then. This is just something I saw and wanted to share, more ideas don't hurt

couple of days ago while watching TDF highlights, you could see Cadel Evans cracking open and sucking down a fully leaded Coca-Cola during his ride. not a suggestion, just a related observation.

The coconut water may not taste as good as most sports drinks, but they are much better for hydration. Hands down.

Except Coconut water doesn't kill brain cells the way the beer did yours.

Consider my son a fan of this!! Thanks for the suggestion. When it got 1/3 melted he said he shook it up and it turned into a slushy and he loved it. The lemon Gatorade was awesome this way.

those guys also consume approx 8,000-9,000 calories a day during the mountain stages. they struggle every day just to consume enough energy.

Probably the best advice on the string.
Also, I encourgage (require is more like it, but encourage sounds nicer) my BB to have a "movement" a few hours before a game. You'd be surprised how much it will impact a child's performance.
