    Playing up in Select

Post  WRG on Wed Aug 10, 2011 10:19 am

Do many kids play up a year once they get into select? I was wondering as my kids are pre-select now and there are some kids on a few of the teams that are really talented and could probably benefit from playing up a year. Once we go select they will have that chance.

Does the landscape of a certain age group change after select because kids start to play up a year or two? Has that happeneed at the older ages? Just curious because that could have a significant impact for the U12 and U13 years for many teams.

There have been a few special kids that have played up a year or two once they are able to go select. They are special players that can handle the speed of play and the physicality of Classic League soccer. There can be some huge discrepancies in size and speed as the players mature.

It really does not change much at all because very few play up. I have never heard of anyone playing up two years other than one player that is now on the national team for his age.

Thanks. That is what I was wondering, just how hard is it and do many make the move. Sounds like based upon experience even the best players primarily stay with there own age group.

I know at least one player that played up in select and ODP. He had to speed-up his game and playing up helped him in his game. When he plays back with his age group, it is not challenging anymore.

More important than playing up, you need to figure out which coach he is going to be training with. You may need to decide on D1 or D2 as well. Especially, if your child is not as tall as the kids in D1, you might be better of placing him up but on a D2 team.

    Good luck!
