Does anyone know of any good goalie trainers? I am in the Arlington area but can travel some if I have to. Looking for some extra training for my son

I've heard Nester Merlo is good, but neither of my boys are GKs.

I would recommend Nestor and Jimmy Garcia. My son currently trains with both and has improved with their training

I agree with Rick and Soccer27 about Jimmy Garcia. My bb worked with several keeper coaches and he felt Jimmy was the best by far. Jimmy works the keepers hard!

Oh yea he does. I like how he can push the child to their full potential. He breaks everything up in level and works really well with 04s up to the U19 kids.

My son continues to train with him weekly and every penny is well worth the price.
He is really not that expensive compare to other goalie coaches.

Absolutey agree on the cost for Jimmy Garcia. Many times with my bb Jimmy went 15-30 minutes over and never asked for any additional money.

My 17yo son has trained with Nester Merlo and went to a session with Jimmy Garcia. I think Jimmy is good for the U15 and under crowd, but my son already did the same skills on his own that Jimmy was doing. Don't get me wrong, I like Jimmy and he works them hard.

Another coach/trainer he worked with and played for was Steve Rose. He's primarily in the Waxahachie area but does an FC Dallas training on Tuesday evenings in Grand Prairie. You might be able to get with him before after the FC Dallas session. As my son put it, Steve taught him how to be a keeper, not just play the position. If you want Steve's info let me know and I'll pm you.

    Different coaches have different styles.

My son has worked with a couple on this list and learned different things from each one of them and found the sessions useful. I would look for a coach that focuses and stresses skills/techniques that your BB is lacking or needs fine tuning. Some are better with fundamentals (hand position, footwork, body position), others work on tactics and positioning, others work on explosive movements (side to side and up down) and speed of coverage from post to post.

1-on-1 Keeper skills are great and very beneficial when trying to fine tune skills, but they are also very exhausting for the player. I think another key is for the player to develop a relationship (possibly the parent at the younger ages) with dialog with the coach so they can talk openly about what they did well and what they need to work on and develop a training format around that. If you are seeing improvement in your BB and your coach is seeing improvement, then you are with the right person.

We've used several keeper coaches in the area over the past several years. Highly recommend Nestor Merlo - his privates are in Richardson by UTD. Nestor is best with the older guys. He is also our FCD keeper coach of choice. (He's the keeper coach for a couple of the clubs in the area.)

We've also started using Jimmy Webb. For younger keepers, he does a great job in breaking down the fundamentals and building back up based on them. Great method if your keeper has developed bad habits over time that need fixing or never got the foundational skills in the first place.

PM me is you need contact info.
