    Cricket and soccer don't mix

Post  coachdom on Wed Sep 14, 2011 1:28 am

I know this is not PYSA's fault, and I know Russell Creek is a public park, but how do we keep cricket balls off of field H during soccer games?

Tuesday, there was a group playing cricket on field I. We had at least three instances in the second half where our game on H was stopped for a cricket player to retrieve a ball. The player benches have their backs to field I and those balls went right over their heads. A shot to the back of the head of a 10 year old by a cricket ball could do serious damage or worse.

I haven't had a kid in Plano Premier since 1999, so I haven't seen this before. To whom in the City of Plano should I address my concerns? We have another 6:30pm game on field H in a few weeks. Short of having a group of dads standing behind the player benches with our softball gloves, do you all have any suggestions of what to do if they are playing cricket on field I during our next weeknight game?

I would agressively pursue this with the Plano Park and Rec at a high level. Had a situation like this in another state years ago with a conflict between mens softball and youth football. Took a screaming line drive missing a helmetless kid's head by inches for common sense to prevail. Point out Plano's liability to this obvious and now well known hazard and they will move on it.

It turns out that the cricket players were intentionally hitting cricket balls at our field because of soccer teams who were practicing at Russell Creek, that night, and infringing upon their territory. We warmed up on field H, but their were some teams practicing near the cricket area.

    From the City of Plano:

... It is the finding of Parks and Recreation staff investigating the issue that the cricket balls were hit intentionally at Field H following an earlier incident during soccer warm-ups that conflicted with cricket practice on Ground 7...

If that was their finding, what was the recommendation?

"It is the City of Plano’s expectation that Plano Cricket Association deal with its teams in a proactive manner so that scheduled use of the City’s sports fields is safe at all times for players, spectators and officials throughout the park. It is the finding of Parks and Recreation staff investigating the issue that the cricket balls were hit intentionally at Field H following an earlier incident during soccer warm-ups that conflicted with cricket practice on Ground 7. This issue is also being addressed with Plano Youth Soccer so that teams conducting pre-game warm-ups or practices do not conflict with scheduled cricket games/practices. Failure for either organization to cooperate in this matter could result in loss of field use and cancellation of games."

A bunch of adults playing cricket hit balls that can injure people at young kids and the City of Plano does nothing. Classic...and sad.

Leaves people two choices when it happens again. Get a tire iron or call the police and file asault charges. Surprised they did not have a major scene when it happened!

WOW, they did NOTHING! They even failed to condemn the intentional and potentially injurious act of hitting cricket balls at children! Evil or Very Mad

It almost reads as though it was justified since, after all, the soccer kids were warming up on the wrong field...how dare they. Definitely very sad. My husband and I were walking the track at Russell Creek one evening while BB was reffing and were appalled at the mess that the cricket players left after one of their games. I wonder if they got a fine for that...PPL teams certainly would have.
