    Practice During Dangerous Weather

    Post  CH1 on Fri Sep 30, 2011 8:52 am

Just wondering how many other teams/coaches continue to practice even with lightening strikes so close? You would think with 240K incidents a year in the US alone, someone would have enough sense to call practice and know that they are endangering children.....

All teams at the practice complex for Liverpool in Flower Mound last night called practice.

Define. "So close" is a bit subjective.

well.....when you see strikes in all 4 cardinal directions...not off in the horizon but strikes "so close" that they appear to be forming in a cloud to ground discharge...is it o.k. to call off practice/games or should the coaches and parents wait for the facility or park sirens to sound?

If you're at a facility with a Thor Guard system (e.g RC), you're fine waiting until the siren. However, I doubt you were if you saw lightning strikes with no siren. The Thor Guard system is set to sound with lightning around 8 miles out (could be more...I forget).
If you think it's truly dangerous, why aren't you taking your kid off the field?

Take your kid out of practice is the best advice I can give you.

However, yesterday was odd, in the number of lightning strikes we had, and did the coach know of the dangerous situation. These days with smart phones, parents are very informed and can communicate to the coach.

Now having said all that...lets me ask everyone who is reading this..

    TOO HOT ..
    LIGHTNING STRIKES
    FREAKISH THUNDERSTORMS
    MOSQUITOES
    TOO COLD

and you want your kid to be a great player and your team to win in Classic League....

What is a Coach to do ?

My sons coach uses a lightning detector,if I recall he stops practice at 15 miles.
