D1 -- toughest schedule to date

Post  scrdad on Mon Oct 17, 2011 2:09 pm

We have talked about the killer schedules faced by some of the teams near the bottom of D1, but what about the teams at the top? Who has had the toughest schedule of the teams in the top 10? The easiest?

Solar Red played Titans (#9) and DTS (#5).
DTS played Bazan (4), FWFC (eight), Sporting United (7), and SR(2).
DT Gall played Bazan (4) and FWFC (eight).
FCD Premier tied the Titans (9).
Bazan played DTS (5), DT Gall (1), and FWFC (eight).
Sporting United lost to DTS (5) and FWFC (eight).
    etc.

Looks to me like FWFC or DTS has had the toughest schedule and FCD Premier the easiest.

Just curious but how would this differ if this was figured it out through the entire fall season? If it you designed a spreadsheet to figure it out I would be interested in knowing.

    RE: cds3's original posting;

First, thanks for the creativity, very nice. Kudos.

Its odd that FWFC would have such a tough initial schedule. Based on their post-QT ranking, I wouldn't imagine them receiving such an uphill assignment. I wonder what the schedule maker was "thinking"?

DTS also got a little bit of the short stick. But they are strong and can dish out as much as they get in return.

Che, Craft, Vedral and Waters, man, what a beast of a schedule. It's not an eye opener considering their QT outcome, but still, wow. They really have been run through the gauntlet. The boys on these teams should stand tall. They'll be survivors when this is all said and done.

On the other side of the spectrum; LP Callahan received a generous helping. Same for Partain.

Mostly, though, the schedule maker got it right.

I would be genuinely interested to understand the rationale behind the scheduling. It would not be difficult to have everyone play a more equal strength of schedule in both the fall and the spring, so the imbalance in the schedule difficulty is puzzling to me.

One theory I heard is classic wants to give the top teams time to continue to gel against weaker opposition before they play one another, but I don't know how true that is and if that is what is best for the teams and league.

It's definitely not based on club affiliation.

3 of the 4 with killer schedules were FCD squads. The QT results clearly had it right for the most part, with few exceptions.

It's not easy creating a schedule. Taking into account field availability, dates, kick-off times, rankings, etc. is a huge chore with a lot of variability and responsibility.

I once was given the task of scheduling the U5 boys season in a local rec league. I was scared to death of making a mistake. i.e. double-booking a Saturday, etc. Some team always wanted a specific time frame because the coach had another team or job commitment. Some wanted exceptions due to tournaments, etc. I can't recall how many times I had to re-do the darn schedule. It was so frustrating that a seemingly easy task was really much more difficult than I imagined.

That was U5 rec! LOL Imagine the CL scheduler, she/he had a million times more pressure to get it correct.

Conflict of interest is an ever-present issue. That's the reason I took the U5 boys… my U5 was a girl. That was 9 years ago. My now 10 yr old bb was still 1 at the time.

in waters case that is not accurate. they will play 4 top ten teams. blue will play 5. lp callaghan will play 5.craft will play 6 and vedral will play 7. so this is not true for LP but i think true for partain who play no top teams at all

Keep in mind that the second look - rank on year to date results - is less telling as it is skewed to reflect that the lower ranked teams have been beaten by stronger teams. Kind of a self-fulfilling prophesy if you will. The season starting rankings is probably more accurate until all the games have been played... then everything gets rather obvious. Shocked

And of course, ansel's perspective sounds pretty good too...

Your theory is definitely on the right track. Historically, the "computational algorithm" used to schedule the first half of the season provides a considerable amount of weight to initial ranking/seeding.

    70 ANORANZAS FC 01B (MARTINEZ)
71 DALLAS TEXANS SC 01B SOUTH (ADAMES)
74 TITANS FC WEST 01B (SAMPAIO)
76 LIVERPOOL FC AMERICA 01B KEEGAN (MARSHALL)
    83 COPPELL FC 01B (NAGGAR)
84 LIVERPOOL FC AMERICA 01B CALL (RAVESTIJN)
    86 SPORTING UNITED S.C. 01B (VEGA)
96 DALLAS TEXANS SC 01B (GALL)
97 FC DALLAS YOUTH 01B PREMIER (PINO)
99 SOLAR CHELSEA SC 01B RED (OGLESBY)
100 FC DALLAS YOUTH 01B (BAZAN)
108 SOLAR CHELSEA SC 01B (PARTAIN)

looks like Solar Partain had the easiest so far no matter and FCD blue most difficult.

Your theory is definitely on the right track. Historically, the "computational algorithm" used to schedule the first half of the season provides a considerable amount of weight to initial ranking/seeding.

Just wonder if this is the best approach for the teams or "just the way it is always done".

Do the top teams stay sharp and continue to improve in the Fall without playing other top teams? Do the lower teams become complacent with losing after the first few weeks of playing a "soul killer of a schedule" and have their morale suffer?

For all I know (or don't know), this may be the best way to go. I would just be curious to hear from someone who does know and can explain the thinking behind it.

I can see your point but also being a top team has its perks and is usually rewarded. Why have a top team play a killer schedule and the lower teams skate? It is the nature of competition. But vedral still got the shaft IMO

Add FCD Blue to that as well. Games YTD against 6 of the top 7 teams in standing:

    1-DT Gall, 3-1
    2-Solar Red, 3-0
    3-FCD Premier, 1-0
    4-FCD Bazan, 7-0
    5-DT South, 4-2
    7-Sporting United, 2-1
    11-Anoranzas, 2-1

Now, this is the SPRING's Schedule weight (Weeks 11-19), including the opponents' original seeding SUM, the number of Top-10 teams to play against and the number of Top-5 teams to play against. So for instance, FCD-Premier has the 7th toughest schedule (86 vs seeding points), will play 5 Top-10 teams, from which 4 are Top-5.

    063 7 5 SOLAR CHELSEA SC 01B (PARTAIN)
    070 7 2 SOLAR CHELSEA SC 01B RED (OGLESBY)
    071 7 3 DALLAS TEXANS SC 01B (GALL)
    079 6 2 FC DALLAS YOUTH 01B (BAZAN)
    079 6 2 WIZARDS FC 01B (GONZALEZ)
    083 5 4 SPORTING UNITED S.C. 01B (VEGA)
    086 5 4 FC DALLAS YOUTH 01B PREMIER (PINO)
    087 4 3 FC DALLAS YOUTH 01B CENTRAL (WATERS)
    087 6 3 TITANS FC WEST 01B (SAMPAIO)
088 5 2 DALLAS TEXANS SC 01B RED DALLAS (CRAFT)
    093 4 4 LIVERPOOL FC AMERICA 01B CALLAGHAN (RAVESTIJN)
    097 4 1 FC DALLAS YOUTH 01B BLUE (CHE)
    097 6 2 DALLAS TEXANS SC 01B SOUTH (ADAMES)
    103 3 3 COPPELL FC 01B (NAGGAR)
    104 3 2 LIVERPOOL FC AMERICA 01B KEEGAN (MARSHALL)
    110 3 0 FORT WORTH FC 01B WHITE (GUENDOUZI)
120 2 0 FC DALLAS YOUTH 01B SOUTH RED (VEDRAL)
    121 3 1 MANCHESTER UNITED RED DEVILS 01B (DAVILA)
    122 2 2 ANDROMEDA FC 01B (VIDELA)
    130 2 0 ANORANZAS FC 01B (MARTINEZ)

I will try to post the "Schedule Weight" every Monday or Tuesday for that weeks's game (so today I will post Week's 8 "Schedule Weight", next Mon-Tue will be the 9th week and so forth)....

I, too, had read somewhere in this forum that the Fall Schedule was basically going to face the Top-10 teams vs. the 11-20 ones…..ish, and if you look at the “Results” page in the Classic site, you will see somehow of a pattern in the crossing, reflecting that; obviously, it is not black & white where you do 1vs20, 1vs19, 1vs18, etc., but it is quite clear they did what was expected.

In my opinion, they should re-seed after the 2nd QT weekend, trusting the pre-QT “long and well thought” seeding process (and I’m not being sarcastic, just emphasizing). This year –as “PG-Boy” mentioned- FWFC came out of the QT with 5 wins and a tie, and still got the 16th seed. I guess it has worked out OK for them, since they have technically “upset” their “4-Win-1-Tie” rivals so far (including the team that left them out in QT-1).

But I agree with “slampg” that at the end, we’ll all see the true team ranking (after 19 games) and will be able to judge the “Seeding Department”, nicely at hindsight.

Short and thrown together while drinking a 12 pack and watching late night Cinemax? lol!
Actually, there are always going to some quibbles (see March Madness) but I thought they generally do (and did) a pretty good job.

I agree, and that's why I think they should use the Pre-QT seeding all the way through scheduling.... but I guess it's irrelevant at that point, right?.....
